Studio Drift
Interactive light installation
Fanless embedded systems for controlling a large-scale kinetic light installation.
Studio Drift creates large-scale kinetic art installations that are exhibited worldwide. Their works combine thousands of moving elements with light and sound — all controlled by embedded computers.
For this project we developed the computer infrastructure that controls the installation.
The challenge
The computers had to be completely silent — in an art installation, any sound is disruptive. At the same time, they had to run 24/7, for years on end, without maintenance. And they had to be compact enough to be invisibly integrated into the installation.
What we built
Fanless embedded systems without moving parts. Passively cooled, completely silent, and built for continuous operation. The systems communicate with each other over an internal network and synchronously control the motion motors and light controllers.
