Van Oord
Real-time underwater visualisation
Workstation for real-time 3D visualisation of dredging operations at sea.
Van Oord is one of the largest dredging companies in the world. Their engineers work with complex 3D models of the seabed to plan and monitor dredging operations in real-time.
For this project we built a workstation that can handle the heavy GPU load of real-time underwater visualisation whilst remaining stable in the harsh environment on board.
The challenge
The software continuously generates point clouds from sonar data and combines them with bathymetric maps. This requires both computing power for the simulation and fast graphical display — a combination that is not easily found off the shelf.
What we built
A workstation with a processor optimised for parallel calculations, ample memory for loading large data files, and a professional graphics card suitable for visualisation work.
The enclosure is suitable for use in a ship environment: robust, with good airflow and resistant to vibrations.
