ARM and RISC-V in 2026 — Mini-ITX to ATX
Whats up with ARM and RISC-V? The new, the still there and the hard to get. > Research compiled August 12, 2026. Covers hardware, software, and EU availability for ARM and RISC-V motherboards from Mini-ITX to ATX-class.
Low power - high performance
ARM and RISC-V are known for low power high performanc CPU’s. RISC-V is the Open Source variant. Both are very interesting from a technical point of view. And the third but very important advantage is design possibility’s. Apple for example is making use of that feature. The hardware and software landscape for ARM/RISC-V has matured significantly by 2026. Both architectures have first-class Linux distro support. However, EU distribution remains the critical bottleneck — almost all boards ship from China with 30–60 day delivery, no local warranty, and no returns. The exceptions are ASRock Rack AmpereOne boards and Gigabyte Server boards, available through EU distributors (stock availability varies strongly). The problem with this CPU architecture was software support which by now is significantly improved by Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora and more. Keen readers are aware that Microsoft is missing from this list, Redmond is probably still working on AI integrations which nobody wants. What follows is our research in what hardware is available inc the specifications.
1. Mini-ITX Boards (170 × 170 mm)
1.1 Milk-V Titan — RISC-V
The most complete RISC-V mini-ITX board to date. Standard DDR4 DIMMs (not soldered), full PCIe 4.0 x16 for discrete GPU, CE mark.

Performance: Single-core ≈ Raspberry Pi 4, multi-core ≈ Raspberry Pi 5 (slightly under). GeekerBench 5.5.1: UR-DP1000 scores ~30% higher single-core and 2× multi-core than ESWIN EIC7702X (DeepComputing DC-ROMA laptop).
1.2 Milk-V Jupiter — RISC-V
Entry-level RISC-V mini-ITX. Soldered RAM, PCIe 2.1 2-lane bottleneck, Wi-Fi 6 onboard. Good for $60 curiosity, uninteresting for serious workloads.

Verdict: The Jupiter is superseded by the Titan. Don’t buy unless it’s $30.

Performance: Between Raspberry Pi 5 and Qualcomm Snapdragon X. Roughly M1-era efficiency but not M1 performance. Firmware bugs cause core mapping issues — some firmwares show only 8 cores active at 2.4 GHz instead of 12 cores. Extended beta period — not production-stable yet.

Critical caveat: The SG2042 uses RVV 0.71, the pre-ratification vector extension standard. Compiler support is limited (GCC 11+ partially supports it, but toolchain gaps remain). Performance is impressive on paper (64 cores) but per-core IPC is modest — this is a density/compute board, not a desktop CPU.
2.2 Loongson 3B6000 Development Board — LoongArch
China’s alternative ISA (derived from MIPS64, inspired by RISC-V). Not RISC-V, not ARM, not x86.

But: LoongArch is a China-only ecosystem with near-zero software outside China. Cross-compiling or QEMU emulation for anything not in the tiny loongarch64 package pool.

Power note: The board requires 3× 8-pin EPS CPU connectors. Standard ATX PSUs have 1–2 EPS cables. You may need a second PSU (splitting cables) or a multi-cable splitter to power this board.
GPU note: No integrated GPU. The mini-DisplayPort on the rear panel is for the BMC serial console only (DisplayPort 1.1a). You need a discrete GPU in one of the 6 PCIe slots for actual user output. Linux arm64 GPU driver support varies by vendor (see Section 4.4).

4. OS Landscape
4.1 ARM64 (AArch64) — First-Class Citizen
ARM64 reached a major milestone: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS moved arm64 from the “ports” archive to the main archive (archive.ubuntu.com), identical to amd64 mirrors.

What works on ARM64: Docker, Python, Go, Rust, Node.js, databases (Postgres, MySQL, MongoDB), VMs, Kubernetes, PyTorch, ONNX, Ollama, FFmpeg, everything you’d need for a Sovereign workstation. The few gaps are proprietary x86-only software (most major apps now have arm64 native versions) and games.
What does NOT work on ARM64: Proprietary x86-only applications without arm64 builds. Kernel-level anti-cheat games. Software with hand-written x86 assembly that hasn’t been ported.
4.2 RISC-V (riscv64) — Now First-Class, Hardware-Limited
Debian 13 “Trixie” officially added riscv64 as a full supported architecture (August 2025). Ubuntu already supported riscv64 since 2021, with board-specific images from Canonical.

Critical detail — Ubuntu and RISC-V profiles:
- RVA20: Older profile. Ubuntu 24.04 LTS supports this. Covers Milk-V Titan (UR-DP1000), Pioneer (SG2042), VisionFive 2, Star64.
- RVA23: Newer mandatory profile (hardware virtualization + vector RVV). Ubuntu 25.10+ (including 26.04 LTS) requires this. Covers SpacemiT K3 (Jupiter 2). Mainline Linux support for many boards targeted Q4 2026.
The RISC-V software story is production-ready for servers, development, CI, and light desktop use. Most open-source software builds and runs. Limitations are per-core performance (current RISC-V chips trail ARM/x86 by 1–2 generations) and desktop polish (GPU/display drivers vary board-to-board).
4.3 LoongArch — China-Only Ecosystem

Verdict: Do not pursue for Sovereign. LoongArch is locked to the Chinese ecosystem. Near-zero software outside China.
4.4 GPU Compatibility — Linux arm64
GPU driver support on ARM64 Linux varies significantly by vendor:

For a Sovereign workstation with discrete GPU: AMD Radeon is the safest choice for arm64 Linux. Intel Arc is improving rapidly. NVIDIA is the worst option on ARM64 (proprietary driver locked to x86).

5.3 The Bottleneck
Every board except ASRock Rack ships from China. There is no EU distributor for:
- Milk-V (RISC-V Titan, Pioneer, Jupiter)
- Radxa (ARM Orion O6, ROCK 5 ITX)
- Loongson (LoongArch)
This means 30–60 day delivery, no local returns, no EU warranty, and import tariffs (which tripled Orion O6 prices in the US).

In conclusion
There is movement in the world of ARM and RISC-V, the big bottleneck: software and OS availability had major improvements. Still lacking is on stock availability and for the smaller form-factors distribution. Meanwhile in the ATX department are very interesting boards on the newest level of technology with DDR5 support and PCIe 5.0 availability.
- ARM64 is production-ready. Ubuntu 26.04 LTS treats arm64 identically to amd64. Docker, PyTorch, ONNX, everything you need for a Sovereign workstation has native arm64 builds.
- RISC-V is production-ready for servers/dev, but not yet for daily driver desktops. Per-core performance is 1–2 generations behind ARM/x86. Desktop polish (GPU drivers, display) varies board-to-board.
- EU distribution is the bottleneck. ASRock Rack AmpereOne is the only board with a real EU distributor (smicro.eu, Poland). Everything else ships from China.
- The ASRock Rack AMPONED8-2T/BCM is the most capable board in this space — 6× PCIe 5.0 x16 slots, upgradable LGA-5964 CPU, 2TB RAM, EU warranty. But it’s a server board (CEB form factor, no consumer display, server PSU wiring, RDIMM-only, 10GbE, IPMI management).
- Mini-ITX RISC-V/ARM exists but all ship from China — Milk-V Titan (RISC-V), Radxa Orion O6 (ARM). Neither has EU distribution.
- LoongArch = China only — China-only ecosystem, zero software outside China.
