Workstations for Game Development

Game design and development is very broad and consists of many components and many different software applications. There are various game engines such as Unity and Unreal in combination with 3D software such as Zbrush, 3ds Max, Blender, and more.

Like most software makers, there are also system requirements overviews for all these applications, where you are advised to meet a number of hardware requirements in order to use the programs. These lists of recommendations are not a guarantee for an optimally functioning Game Development workstation, but provide the minimum requirement. The official information provided by software producers is not always up-to-date, and often lags behind hardware development which is progressing at breakneck speed.

Therefore, Ikbenstil Computers equips these Game Development Workstations with the most current and useful and balanced hardware for the program’s operation.

The hardware: Processor (CPU): For game development workstations we distinguish between a standard workstation and a high-end workstation. The standard workstation is used when designing and creating in programs such as Maya, Blender, ZBrush, 3ds Max etc. in a studio with a central compilation server that handles the heavy work. The fastest AMD Ryzen or Intel Core processor is then an excellent choice. When you design in the Unreal Engine where maximum computing power is required, then the high-end workstation is the right tool, with the AMD Threadripper 7980X being the optimal Unreal CPU. The AMD platform has an 8-channel memory bus which provides a huge speed advantage when compiling code.

The graphics card (GPU) The GPU is responsible for rendering, the more GPU, Cuda cores the faster the process is handled. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 32GB in the high-end workstation is the fastest, which card is suitable for you strongly depends on the available budget, a more affordable RTX 5070 Ti or the RTX 5080 are also suitable candidates.

Memory (RAM) Ikbenstil Computers recommends at least 64GB in the standard workstation and at least 128GB distributed over 8 modules in the powerful AMD Threadripper workstation.

Storage In the Game Development workstations, we choose a fast primary NVMe SSD for the operating system and programs. And for projects a secondary NVMe SSD of at least 1TB. Of course, storage for content is also needed, this can be on a regular SATA SSD or optionally large volume HDDs, file server or NAS.

Custom build Ikbenstil Computers has made workstations that align with standard workflows and the associated software. If your choice is not included here, you can contact one of our specialists, who can offer you a custom solution.
